Steve’s comments from the liner notes:

“The Lost Pieces in this collection were composed between 1988 and 1992. Some have appeared on limited edition multi-artist compilations. Others were not created for any particular recording project. Instead, they documented and somehow externalized moments of personal transition in ways that only music can do. Often I’d lose track of these pieces shortly after they were recorded. Then, months or even years later, I’d be sifting through boxes of tapes (many left unmarked, a bad habit that continues!) looking for something else and would be surprised to rediscover a piece I had composed in a moment of private inspiration. I would feel a strange sense of time shifting as the flood of emotions that originally infused the music would be unleashed once again. Now that these lost pieces have been found, for me they take on a new and interesting life together, one that was conceived unconsciously in separate yet interconnected stages over several years.” – Steve Roach, April 1993.

released September 18, 2021

1 Eclipse – Recorded on the night of a full lunar eclipse, this was one of the last pieces produced in my Los Angeles studio before moving to the desert. It was originally commissioned by the ECHOES  Living Room Concert Series and aired on radio stations across the U.S.

2 After the Dream – This was recorded shortly after Dreamtime Return was completed but not yet released. It was one of several pieces that grew out of the momentum of the Dreamtime project.

3 Mojave: At the Tree – A long lost piece dating from the time between Western Spaces and Desert Solitaire. It was created soon after returning from one of many inspired stays at the Joshua Tree National Monument in the Mojave Desert.

4 Since We Are Away – This spiral-like mandala of melody grew from a powerful sense of yearning –
a musical message to my wife Linda who was thousands of miles away.

5 Full Moon Prophecy – At an ocean cliff somewhere in California, a warm full moon night signals the beginning of a new life.

6 Red Shore – At another ocean far from California, the sun dissolves slowly in a blaze of color and the sound is heard once more. The inspiration carries through Repose and Expanding Again…

9 Three Reptiles Wait at the Opening to the Underworld – Recorded live in concert Tucson, May 1992.

10 Closer – Recorded precisely when one very pivotal year melted into the next – midnight 1990-1991.
